Removed a star since the robot gets confused by the simulated wood grain and 3D texture in my dark LVP flooring. To work around the issue, I had to enable the option to follow the flooring direction and then configure the flooring direction in the map to be the opposite of the actual direction so that it cleans the LVP flooring in a perpendicular fashion. For some reason, it seems the reflectivity and the simulated wood texture of the flooring, combined with overhead lights and maybe the robot's own light, caused the robot to stop and go in a circle many times during each cleaning. Having it go against the direction of the flooring was the fix and has been repeated numerous times in different lighting scenarios to verify.
Aside from that issue, I noticed the robot would try to navigate to an area it couldn't reach (corner space behind some dumbbells in the gym area) by traveling through half the house to try to get to that area through the wall from another room. I added no-go zones to areas like this and other areas it had trouble navigating (transition from tile to polished concrete to rug around a bunch of chair legs, for example). Also added a no-go zone for a power cord in the theater running across the carpet to a table as it would run over the cord every time and waste 5 minutes or so trying to figure out what to do. A few other no-go zones were added as I observed the robot so I could optimize the cleaning time. The end result is a thorough cleaning that completes within a consistent timeframe and requires one charge about 75% through due to the size of the house.
I no longer find balls of fur or anything else on the floors. It gets absolutely everything. I can walk the house barefoot or in socks and my socks and feet do not get dirty at all or get dog hair or anything else stuck to them. As I mentioned below, my two dogs have short hair and while they do shed a lot, the vacuum never has any issues with tangling and I see no need to buy the upgraded brush for that. To my surprise, the dogs were never afraid of the vacuum. One of them would follow it at first and sniff closely and the other would observe from a higher position. Now they both just ignore it and the vacuum will navigate around them when they are in the way.
The app works well but the mapping is hard to adjust on my small iPhone SE screen. I recommend using a tablet to make map adjustments. It’s easy to do that from my iPad Mini. I also have the zoom accessibility setting enabled on both devices, allowing me to double tap with 3 fingers to more easily view details and make fine adjustments.
I'm very happy with this purchase and would recommend if you are willing to spend some time observing the robot and making adjustments to optimize the cleaning. Keep in mind that the robot may seem to work better at first and get dumber like it did for me, but that seems to be a result of the very dirty floors now being so clean and shiny that the reflections and floor texture can sometimes confuse the robot. Test it thoroughly every day during the return period until you're happy or you've decided it isn't going to work for you.
Original review:
This thing is the real deal. Premium packaging, quality materials, easy setup, tons of features, and most importantly it cleans my floors so well. I have mostly tile and LVP (luxury vinyl plank), with some polished concrete, some rubber for the gym, a thin rug and dense low pile home theater carpeting. The robot took about 20 minutes to map out 2450 sq ft and I split up the areas and added carpet designation to the carpeted areas it couldn’t detect. It is currently on the third cleaning and I’ve been having it vacuum and mop at the same time for each cleaning. I vacuumed before using it but it has been able to reach so many areas my Shark vac cannot get to. As for mopping, the house had not been mopped at all for a full year. The floors look so clean and shiny now and feel clean with no grit under foot. I do find an occasional ball of fur but those are easy to pick up. I may get the upgraded brush at some point but my dogs have short hair so I’m not too worried about it.
Update: Dreame reached out and provided ideas of settings to try, and what to check on the robovac and the base to improve the cleaning efficiency. I really appreciate that they want you to have a positive experience with their product and provide possible solutions - such as ensure the vacuum bag is not full, as it fills quicker when there is dog hair, otherwise it is not able to dump what it collected and thus not able to vacuum as well for hair in the way.
The other item they mentioned is to do multi passes. As we were doing normal house cleaning recently and we were using our upright vacuum, I realized that yes, I did need to do several passes with our upright vacuum to remove the dog hair. Thus, I really appreciate the advice from the company and look forward to seeing how things improve.
Due to how well it does clean our laminate floors, how strait forward it is to use the app, and how the company cares that you are satisfied with their product and try to help you so it does perform successfully, I would change my rating to 4 stars if it would let me.
Great cleaner but LOUD grinding noise when cleaning the mop pads!
